Get This Wrong and All Your Professional Networking Efforts Are Wasted

Imagine attending many networking events, reaching out to countless people online, and walking into rooms full of strangers without a clear reason why or who you're there for. It’s exhausting and often a waste of your precious time. This is why defining your career goals is crucial.

Know What You Want

Before reaching out to potential connections or exploring opportunities, it’s essential to have a clear understanding of your career goals. This will surprise you but the overwhelming majority of people don't have clear career goals, and just look for any opportunity that comes their way, attending every event, messaging many decision-makers online etc., which is why they don't succeed and just waste their time. Having a specific goal will guide your networking efforts, helping you connect with the right people and make efficient use of your time and resources.

Why It Matters:

  • Clear Direction: Helps you focus on what you’re trying to achieve.
  • Right Connections: Identifies the right people to connect with (and who not to).
  • Efficiency: Allocates your time and resources effectively.
  • Effective Communication: Improves how you communicate with potential connections.

Week 1: The Foundation

We start with the foundation, emphasizing the importance of knowing your career goals. As the saying goes, “If you don’t know what you want and why, then nothing else matters.”

Define Your Goals

By the end of this lesson, you should have a solid understanding of what you want to achieve in your career. This laser-focus is critical; without it, you’ll be all over the place, wasting time and effort.

This Week’s Challenge: Set Your Career Goal

What is it that you want? Use the following framework to determine the industries or roles you are targeting:

Step 1: Self-Assessment

  • Identify Your Skills and Qualifications:
    • List your key skills, strengths, and qualifications.
    • Consider any certifications, degrees, or specialized training.
  • Position Examples: List 2-4 job titles that match at least 60% of your skills and qualifications.
  • Industries to Target: Research trends in industries that interest you and have high employability rates.
  • Geographic Focus: Consider opportunities in specific locations like Canada, Dubai, or Berlin.

Goal Statement Craft a clear, specific career goal. For example: “My goal is to be a Director of Strategy or Strategy Advisor in the sports event management or healthcare industry, working with senior leadership or in the office of the CEO in Dubai or Berlin.”

Notice how the goal statement highlights the roles I want and the industry? I now know which roles I will be targeting, industry and region giving me full clarity of who I need to network to get what I want.

Conclusion

Defining your career goals is the first step in effective networking. Without this clarity, your efforts may be scattered and unproductive. Start with a strong foundation and focus your networking efforts to build meaningful connections that can propel your career forward.
